With 2014 almost at an end…..I thought I’d take a look ahead to some of the UK Comic Cons that are on offer in 2015. Some I’ll return to and some new additions I’ll try for the first time.

I’ve been at every London Super Comic Con since it started back in 2012 and thankfully it’s progressed year on year to become one of my favourites…….and this year’s topped them.

Today Jon Lock begins his Kickstarter campaign to bring us The Book of Life which collects volume 1, 2 & 3 of his impressive Afterlife Inc. creation……and having seen the first copy of it at last months London Super Comic Con…..it’s fair to say it’s well worth it.

Occupying a fair amount of much sought after shelf space in my book case is Marvel’s X‑Factor. The 3rd volume in the series caught my eye last summer and I’ve been a faithful devotee of the Multiple Man’s detective agency ever since. Peter David’s excellent story telling combines exciting immediacy and a willingness to embrace the events of the larger Marvel Universe with slow burning character drama. X-Factor is the Coronation Street of the comic book world, with added fighting, mutants and lycanthropes and I’m not ashamed to admit that I love it.

After queuing for several hours at London Super Comic Con in the hope of requesting an awesome (no doubt hipster-style) Supergirl sketch from McKelvie, only to discover a tweet MUCH later on saying he was just out his bed, I wandered down a couple of desks to watch Emanuela Lupacchino hard at work.

Last month’s trip to London Super Comic Con was already exciting enough with the prospect of meeting Stan Lee, however the weekend’s hype-factor was increased ten-fold with the possibility of a new Phonogram being announced. Sure enough, after some late night twitter feed refreshes, the news came through that Phonogram 3 would be coming our way from the Legends of Rock Comics: Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. Unfotunatley we didn’t manage to get an interview with the “Dream Team” (McKelvie has a certain birthday bash and drinks to blame for that) however the (much more sober) Kieron Gillen was on hand on the Sunday to answer our persistent chanting of “TELL US MORE!”.
Among the list of attendees at this year’s London Super Comic Con was Mouse Guard creator David Petersen. Promoting his recent Legends of the Mouse Guard (reviewed here) I couldn’t miss the chance to catch-up with him and pick his brains on just where the idea came for his epic Mouse Guard title. A ‘Lord of the Rings’ type adventure… only with heavily armed mice.

This latest Mouse Guard title from creator David Petersen sees him take a bit more of a backseat from writing/art duties. With a mix of creators handpicked by Petersen himself given free-reign to explore the Mouse Guard myth’s with their own brand of storytelling and keen eye for drawing a mouse armed to the teeth.
