Being a bit of a sucker for story lines involving a culture clash, especially when one of those cultures involves the supernatural, demons and all manner of things that go ‘bump’ in the night, I pre-ordered The Occultist on solicits alone, never knowingly having come across its creators or its preceding one shot. Young male student with girl trouble, suddenly becomes a force to be reckoned with in the ‘dark arts’. The premise of an older Harry Potter doesn’t immediately grab me and neither does issue 1 of this 3 part series, although I do have a hopeful suspicion that by the end I may be singing a different tune. Lately I’ve been talking about how much I’ve been enjoying fun comic books. Some of you might be thinking ‘What is she talking about? Aren’t comic books supposed to be fun?’ And to an extent you’d be right. It seems to me lately however, I’ve spent a lot of time reading ‘edgy’, ‘dark’, ‘whatever’ comic books. Cosby and McCool’s PIGS is winning fans all over the place and its not hard to see why. Terrorism, espionage and political intrigue are running through this book alongside characters that are becoming more individual and more defined as the series progresses.
