We’ve reached the end of our 2012 highlights and with a rollercoaster of a year behind us the most satisfying thing has been being part of it all.
January 2012 saw Image Comics release Fatale from the creative team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips – a partnership that has brought us previous highlights like Criminal, Sleeper & Incognito.
Back in September I made the trip across the water to Ireland…..not exactly the same surroundings as MorrisonCon enjoyed by Craig but just as worthy of attention.
I don’t think we could have a list of highlights that didn’t include Amazing Spider-Man and even though 2012 saw a fairly muted response to the latest movie, the comic has gone from strength to strength in the hands of Dan Slott.
From the start of DC’s new 52 reboot I picked up pretty much all titles from issue #1 and dropped pretty much all of them down to a core few titles. Red Lanterns survived that cull and the recent DC trend for crossovers saw me pick up all the Lanterns titles again for Geoff Johns Epic crossover.
When you see Grant Morrison’s name on a new release there is always a good chance that most folks will pick it up. Although with this title I tried to steer clear of any spoilers on the run up to it coming out.
Marvel’s Phase 1 of releases would reach its conclusion with the release of Avengers Assemble back in April and all in the trusted hands of fan-favourite Joss Whedon.

A DC release that initially slipped under my radar saw them start a six-issue mini-series as a celebration of He-Man’s 30th Anniversary………making me feel old and young again at the same time.

I’ve already had my favourite comic of the year (Punk Rock Jesus) but this choice goes to my favourite Graphic Novel of the year – The Underwater Welder.

So it turns out that two of the best books of the DCNew52 relaunch are not actually proper DC books after all. With DC pinching more and more of if its imprint ideas, it goes to show that Vertigo is really where they should be focusing their attention – but I’ve already had my big Vertigo rant a few days ago, so let’s talk about the comics instead!
