If you’re reading this soon after it was posted, and don’t already have a copy of Saga #1, chance are it’s going to be hard to come by in your Local Comic Shop, and for good reasons. This book, in more ways than one, is the Star Wars of comics, and let me tell you why.

Free time for a Comics Anon blogger these days is few and far between, meaning there’s little time to read much more than comics we plan to read, let alone anything else we might have picked up on recommendation. For me, there are a few examples of books that I’ve just not had the time to get to, so instead the issues pile up in the background, waiting for a rainy day or an unusual week where I manage to get through everything early. Our recent trip to London Super Comic Con meant spending two six-hour long trips on the train across the weekend – perfect for catching up on those long overdue reads. In the first of a series of features I’m calling “Catch Ups”, I’ll be reviewing these long overdue comics – starting with the excellent miniseries from Image – Last of the Greats.

A Couple of months a made a lot of noise about cutting my DC pull list back because I was spending too much money on substandard comics and sacrificing other more interesting books. As a result of reading through previews for March 2012, with so many good books on the horizon, it was time to make some tough decisions: getting rid of heroes I was reading just because their name started with Super. Well March is here and so begins the start of some promising books – starting this week with The Manhattan Projects from Image.

Okay, I’ll admit it; I’m a bad feminist. I am more interested in reading a great comic book that seeing a fifty/ fifty gender split and I positively detest quotas like this being shoehorned into comics or any other medium. I am however, ‘a real woman’ and I will also admit to getting pissed off with gravity defying boobs, skimpy battle costumes and the like. Maybe I’m a tough comic fan to please? I don’t think so. I think if creators put the right amount of effort into their characters and stories and let those elements be the focus instead of cramming in as many underrepresented minorities or cleavage shots as they can; we’d see better books, more often. Thankfully, Image’s recently relaunched Glory does just that. Continue reading

As part of last years Comics Anonymous Christmas highlights feature we discussed the quality of new titles being published by Image. Luthor Strode and Last of the Greats among others, made last year one in which many mainstream only fans gained the right impetus to move out of their comfort zones. Peter Panzerfaust is the latest title from Green Wake writer Kurtis J Weibe and artist Tyler Jenkins. Continue reading

FATALE #1 by G-Man

Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips collaborate on one of the hottest titles of 2012 so far…..and we’re still only in January.  An opening line like “So here’s how my life went off the tracks one day,” sets us up for a typical noir tale that we’ve seen in the likes of Criminal. Sleeper and Incognito from the pairing previously….although reading on, there’s clearly different elements involved here too. Continue reading

Another glorious, gritty cover draws us into this 4-issue mini and it’s no secret that I hate to think that the next issue will be the last.  There’s a world of options here and Oren “Rooster” Redmond is almost like a buddy of mine…..maybe not a sparring buddy because he’d kick my ass but at least someone that I know and could cheer on in his next fight.  Who knows maybe it’s my inner-cage fighter that’s getting its release with this title but there’s much more ‘heart’ (ignore the pun) in this title than you might think.

NEAR DEATH #1-4 by G-Man

I’d seen the 1st issue of this Image title advertised a number of times and something about it just seemed to call out to me and even though I didn’t have it pre-ordered….I picked up the first issue from my local comic book shop, Red Hot Comics, on another whim.

HEART #2 by G-Man

Following my enjoyment of Issue #1 (and review) – I had high hopes for the 2nd issue in this 4-part mini from Image comics.
