The Empty Man from Boom Studios is a 6-parter that still has 1 issue to go but the story so far has been gripping.
This release feels like it’s snuck under the radar in a similar way to Magneto did and both by one of my new favourite writer’s Cullen Bunn so I’m glad i picked up both. In Empty Man though it’s a dark & disturbing tale of the outbreak of the Empty Man disease and the aftermath as the CDC & FBI investigate it’s cause and the recent disturbing cases it’s been causing.
The religious element makes an appearance as you’d expect and the body count starts to creep up as the mystery disease clearly takes hold of it’s victims causing mental and physical symptoms. Bunn nails the characters with this and Vanessa adds a deeper, darker element to a story which already has dark themes – the result is one of those rare mixes of enthralling and uncomfortable tales that has you desperate for more. If anything, the only downside is that it has to end at all. Grim, gritty reading that’s rewarding……well worth a read.
G-Man
