After a flood of announcements from Marvel & DC recently about the future movie schedules – I thought I’d take a look at the one’s that we’ll see next year.
The one thing that you notice straight away is just how few comic book movies are actually going to be released next year and while schedule shuffles have been the main reason for that…..it will maybe be a year of breathing space before the run through until 2020 & beyond kicks in with more movies yet to be announced. Although comic book TV shows should more than ease that fix I would hope with the likes of Arrow, The Flash, Constantine (which may continue beyond it’s initial 13 episode 1st season), Gotham, the start of Daredevil from NetFlix and more all on our screens in 2015 as well.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Joss Whedon is putting the band back together as he returns to The Avengers which ended Marvel’s Phase One movies with the satisfying, blockbusting conclusion that it had been building up to and as this acts as the penultimate movie in Phase Two…..there’s a BIG buzz about this already. The expectation couldn’t be higher and after the heights reached by Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy in particular, there’s even more interest in this as the Marvel machine seems to keep on trucking with nothing more than a minor bump along that road of comic book conversions. The familiar faces are there as the Avengers Assemble against Ultron voiced by James Spader and if the trailer is anything to go by…….I can’t help but think that this will take further steps to bolster Marvel Studios box office powess. The wait between trailer & movie release date has never seemed so far away. Keep up to date with this at the official website and Facebook page.

Ant-Man
Closing out Marvel’s Phase Two movies is a new addition with Ant-Man but it’s hardly been straight-forward to get this one onto the big screen. Director changes and script rewrites have been the main news item associated with this one but it’s now got an official slot in the release schedule and it’s got an impressive cast lined up too with Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross/Yellowjacket & Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. A good cast is a solid start and this may well be another surprise for comic fans and non-comic fans alike. No trailer as of yet but the early test footage from a while back gives you at least a glimpse of the potential that’s there. Check out the Facebook page for more updates.

The Fantastic Four
Another reboot this time and it’s The Fantastic Four from 20th Century Fox and while they’ve attempted to reboot Spider-Man with a fairly muted response they have been able to breathe new life into the X-Men franchise so the jury is still out on this one I think. Closer to the time we may start to see more images and a trailer but the change in cast sees Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman & Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. Early buzz around this has given a lot of concern with the rumour mill being thrown into over-drive ahead of any real announcements…..safest thing we can say is that there will be four of them…..other than that…..it may warrant the fantastic tagline and breathe new life into the franchise…..or it may fall shortly. Time will tell but the cast seems solid enough to pull it off and the latest X-Men movie hit a new height for the Fox movies.

Star Wars VII : The Force Awakens
Not sure if this qualifies as a comic book movie but it’s geeky enough to be in the mix…..and lets face it, this is one that EVERYONE will be itching to see. JJ Abrams in the Directors chair after doing a stellar job with the last two Star Trek movies and he’s the type of film-maker that could really add to the Star Wars mythology. The fact that he’s got the original cast AND a new cast involved speaks volumes on the scale he’s aiming for and the respect that he’s showing the saga so far…..minus those prequels right?? Big hopes for the Galaxy Far, Far Away to provide us with a movie that matches the awe and wonder of the original releases back in the 70’s/80’s and with a trailer due within the next 24 hours…….we’ll surely see the internet creak & groan under the sheer weight of expectation and excitement that trailer download will bring.
