This release from Moogs Kewell won two SICBA awards in 2013 (Best Cover and Best Comic or Graphic Novel) and her illustrated travel diary tells us all about a trip to Japan for her friends wedding.
As with any trip we start with a long & eventful flight where TV and turbulence bring us into Narita where the hours of being awake and lost baggage mix in a haze of excitement and exhaustion. All of which is almost instantly cancelled out when she meets her friends and the two week whirlwind tour, and Wedding, make this instantly likeable. Mixing pop-culture and observations to let us get to know our intrepid traveller along the way…..and all with an air of fun and wonder.
The embrace of a new culture, the sights, the sounds, the people are all represented with quirky artwork from Kewell which seem to have an anime-vibe to it and there’s some impressively detail landmarks thrown in there for good measure……and what would a trip to Japan be without the food, the drink…..and of course…..the karaoke…..LOTS of Karaoke. The highs and lows of travel are all on show and while the book itself may feel short…….the panoramic layout for it and the amount of fun and interesting detail crammed into the book makes this feel as epic as any longhaul trip should be. A testament to how personal and accomplished Big in Japan really is……..and it’s convinced me even more to move Japan up my list of must-see places in the world.
You can pick up this….and some of Moogs’ pretty cool jewellery over in her store
8/10
