As my interest in some of DC’s New 52 releases wavered this year I took a chance with their video game tie-in Injustice: Gods Among Us…….and I was glad I did.
Free from any of the continuity shake-up we’d seen at DC, this title seemed to appear out of the blue as I just picked up the physical copies but I soon found out that it had started out as a digital comic tie-in to the game. It’s first run of 36 digital releases came to an end just recently but with an announcement that it’s to return in January 2014 for a new run.
Free from a number of limitations, this release captures what I was fully expecting from DC’s New 52 reboot – characters we recognize but taken to an all new level. All-out war from the off and with Superman’s idyllic life shattered at the hands of The Joker……we see an extreme reaction from the Man of Steel. Yet, the reaction brings with it realism to the character that I maybe haven’t seen before and that was a refreshing thing for a character like Superman. That initial reaction starts things rolling and a who’s who of DC’s line-up start to take sides and start to tackle the injustices around the world. The thing with this approach though is that it’s counterbalanced with a sense of consequences which again helped this standout from other DC’s titles.
Well worth a read and a definite entry in my 2013 highlights.
