Lou Scannon #6

With the first five issues of Lou Scannon going from strength to strength (see #1, #2, #3, #4 & #5) – it was always going to be interesting to see what creators Jim Bampfield, Kris Carter & Dan Harris would do next with their sci-fi, comedy masterpiece.

Here in issue #6 though…..there’s a definite change in the air as the Lou Scannon gang seem to have made a definite step away from the sit-com & episodic vibe of those first issues.  This issue marks what feels like the beginning of the epic that’s planned for Lou and the crew of the Raging Hormone.  The comedy one-liners are still there in abundance and with the typical nods to all things sci-fi and geeky but they’ve effortlessly slipped into new territory and the set-up they’ve run in the initial issues is really starting to pay off.

The mystery being pursued by Lou takes the story over as he finally tracks down Bart Ender and grills him for info on the medallion and its meaning in Lou’s life.  All the while, the crew have space pirates and the G.C.P.F. on their tale and as Lou seems to be getting closer and closer to answers they seem to be closing in and forcing them to leg it.  The writing is tight from the gang and then the art is even tighter…..or maybe that’s tighterer as they would say.

The full-on colour cover and the black & white interiors are still key to me liking this release but the story and the urge to join the crew is why I love it.  The only thing that got me riled up was the build-up to an ending that left me wanting more……and that’s the epic change for the Lou Scannon.  While issues 1 to 5 had me giggling and totally on the space-scum’s side…..it’s #6 that makes me want to move next door to some of the creative team and drill holes in the walls so I can see where they’re going next – ok, maybe that’s a bit lunatic-like but this is a self-published title that I pre-order within days, if not hours, of it becoming available…..THAT’S how good it is.
