The arrival of London Super Comic Con in 2012 on the UK convention scene marked one of many recent steps to bring the feel of those large US cons to the UK fans (LSCC 2012 reviewed here). Starting as they did with a guest like Stan “The Man” Lee was a sure-fire way to get the crowds in and generate a significant buzz that carried us comic-loving Brits through the weekend like a wave and with 2013’s event just a few days away we’ve still got ample time to figure out just what & who we’re going to try and see over the course of the 2 days.
With all the guests announced, all the signings planned and all the panels scheduled it’s shaping up to be a pretty big event and while they may not have an individual guest as big as Stan Lee there has been a consitent push to keep the fans happy. An ample share of key artists and writers from our favourite characters and titles is sure to keep the frenzied masses queuing to their hearts content for that much-prized signature on the most carefully bagged issues they own. I include myself in that group and I’m looking forward to another weekend surrounded by like-minded fans of a medium that’s gone from strength to strength in the last few years.
Sure the movies have helped but with DC’s New 52 reboot, the Marvel Now! reshuffle of creative teams, IDW’s licensed releases, Image’s constant flow of original ideas and Dark Horses typical blend of pulp/horror characters helping to broaden the titles on offer and increase the depth of quality we see released week after week – it’s a wonder we have any shelf space left. Fortunately for us, another significant factor we’ve seen in the last few years is the UK independent and self-published contribution, as these titles continue to be flooded with the passion and risk-taking that make comics take that step out from under the shadow of a big name publisher. Events around the country have made these titles more readily available and their inclusion at these larger events get them the attention they deserve.
This year’s Con should be a new experience for me too – as I will be catching up with people I’ve met/talked to at recent Cons and some of the creators that have entertained me throughout the last year – be they big names or indie. An entire weekend in the company of my fellow comic book fans will surely have me buzzing for the duration – although this year I am without the other members of the Comic Anonymous gang who I will surely miss as this blog has been very much started and grown on the social element of being a comic book fan…….at least half our conversations start with the question “Have you read _____???”……the other half has been debating which title is the best/worst we’ve read…….giving us MUCH to talk about for sure.
For anyone attending this year’s con, I urge you to take your favourite issues to be signed, track down those elusive issues you need to fill the gaps in your collection but also to take a chance at reading the self-published work that will be on offer over the course of the weekend. I know there’s quite a few releases I’ll be sure to pick up and review in the coming weeks….but I’m also hoping to attend as many of the panels on offer too and see what 2013 will bring across the many, many, MANY titles I already read.
Keep an eye on the schedules on the LSCC website as well as the guests you’ll be able to see. Try a wander down artist alley to see the best talent in the business drawing characters faster and more amazingly than you’ve ever seen them drawn before.
Lets not forget there will also be a number of new books launched at this years event and a number of exclusives on offer too.
I’m hyped and I’ve been caught off-guard with how quickly this years event has come around but with so much for me to see, so many things I’d like to get signed and so many people I want to catch-up with – I’m sure it’ll be a great con to kick-off 2013 with.
