HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011 DAY 13 – DEATH OF ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN & ULTIMATE REBOOT by G-Man

We’ve almost hit two whole weeks of highlights, proving that the Comics Anonymous gang had a pretty good year. As much as we’re really looking forward to 2012, 2011 gave us not only some good comic events, but some exciting and important comic titles. Today, Gary’s post is about one of the biggest events to hit Marvel this year.

Reading an Ultimate title with “Death of” in it can pretty much let you in on what’s going to happen but in this case… it’s more “how” we get there that’s important.  Across 2 titles, Ultimate Spider-Man #156-160 by Brian Michael Bendis & Mark Bagley and Avengers vs New Ultimates #1-6 by Mark Millar and Leinil Yu, we see the whole story unfold and reach the most poignant conclusion that it ever could.  We knew what was coming but it didn’t stop it being a surprise and that’s the brilliance of Marvel’s move and willingness to take it’s big characters and allow them to be messed with in a big way.  This has lead to a reboot of the Ultimate Universe, with a new Spider-Man on the scene, a new Ultimates team on the go and we’re moving on while still keeping that feeling of loss in our back pocket.  Brilliant, action-packed and deeply sad the Death of Spider-Man brought us the end of an era – in an unexpected way… long live Ultimate Spider-Man.
