It’s almost the end of 2011 and it’s also almost Christmas, so in an advent-calendar-review-of-the-year kind of way, Comics Anonymous would like to share with you our highlights in the world of comics every day until Christmas. Yes it’s better than chocolate! So let’s kick off Day 1…
Radical Publishing may not be a name on everyone’s lips at the moment…but I can only think “Why the hell not?” As a self-confessed fan-boy, I’ve read my fair share of their titles from Hercules, to Hot Wire, to Earp and many others but one of my TOP must-reads this year has been Damaged. It’s a 6-part gritty thriller written by David Lapham and Illustrated by the amazing Leonardo Manco… and it’s one of those rare combinations of writing/art just working effortlessly together to tell the story. The high detail from Manco and the easy switch between pithy dialogue and involving narrative have helped this gain decent buzz and popularity in the comic book world.
We’re half-way through this with issue #4 due out next week and it’s already one of the issues I’m counting down to. It tells the story of two brothers: one is a Detective on the last lap of his remaining cases before retirement and the other, his vigilante brother, is taking care of the mob in San Francisco using his own methods. It’s an involving title that manages to suck you in and have you rooting for both sides. I’ve reviewed each of the first 3 issues (#1, #2 and #3) and I just can’t wait to see how the title unfolds for each of the remaining issues – we’ll have a preview of issue #4 coming up in the next few days, so stay tuned!
G-Man
