I was almost certain after reading 30 Days #1 that Steve Niles had set us up with a strong ongoing series that would only get better as the story developed. After issue #2 I am now dead certain. From the deliciously brutal and gruesome covers, to the insane, and at times frighteningly child-like interiors, artistically the book is brilliant. Keith and Fotos work together to re-imagine and multiply to the Nth degree, all the flesh crawling unease, terror and grot that occupies the mind of Steve Niles.
Issue #2 concerns itself primarily with ‘a curious woman and a deadly confrontation’ and leaves the burgeoning vampire civil war for another day. There is also a refreshing take on vampires as it transpires that the FBI tries to get its hands on a live specimen.
If you like vampires or horror comics you really should look this book up. I’ll admit that the art may not be to everyone’s taste but Niles can really write some ridiculously chilling scenes. I think this new 30 Days will be some of his best work yet.
8/10
