This is a good time to put out an Apes Comic. Boom! are taking advantage of the phenomenally popular recent film and are putting out an Apes mini series by some top comics talent. This book isn’t just a cash in on the current popularity of the franchise, but also a really good comic book that stands up on its own merits and should appeal to more than just Apes fans.
Thankfully the team behind this series give us who are less knowledgable about the Apes franchise an introduction that sets the scene and gives us a working understanding of Ape society. Their rigid caste system in difficulty, humans are considered animals but some progressive Ape scientists are trying to shatter what they see as misconceptions by working closely with ‘pet humans’. Some Apes however, are being driven to the brink by their desire to halt progress. So much so that they might be driven to break their most important of laws, and kill their fellow Ape.
There are some extremely complex themes woven through the pages of this comic book. it also sets itself against such dramatic backgrounds as courtroom drama and police chase which although are exciting by themselves, when combined with this dark and dangerous art become panels choking with tension.
Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes is written by both Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman with Hardman also drawing and inking. This is a top drawer comic book, well worth picking up.
